May 3rd, 2009:  Makeup Makeover

Q  I'm about to turn 44 and, with my partner's best friend's wife being only 24, not only am I feeling invisible - but old too! My make-up has never been great and, although I've tried out products and cosmetic counter make-overs, I can't find a look I am happy with. Could you recommend a make-up class that is guaranteed for pleasing results? Also, a department store cosmetic counter that does good make-overs. It would be such a help to me, as I am fighting depression, having been made redundant, and struggling with the confidence to socialise again... Many thanks in advance.

A We’re so sorry to hear about your difficulties but do take heart – there’s lots of help out there.  If we were in your situation, we’d nip along to a big department store such as Selfridges or House of Fraser and book in for free make-up consultations with several brands.  Our choices would be Bobbi Brown, Giorgio Armani and Chanel, who all do beautiful makeovers.

However, we note that you’ve been made redundant so may be on a strict budget.  The above aren’t cheap brands but you will get to know the type of products you need, what your best features are, how to camouflage others, useful application techniques, plus how to choose and possibly blend colours.  Do ask the consultants questions – we have found them invariably lovely and helpful.  There is nothing so rewarding as seeing someone come in looking despondent and then a Cinderella transformation.

Our advice is to invest time – and possibly money - in finding a good foundation.  (Our own tip for foundation is to mix it with a little primer so it never looks mask-like, and to apply it with a proper foundation brush.) Jo finds that the new Maybelline Pure Liquid Mineral Foundation, just £7.99 for 30ml, which is packed with light-reflective micronised minerals for a radiant glow, gives as good coverage as more expensive brands. Sarah is mad about Clinique New Even Better Makeup SPF15, £19.08 for 30ml.  Tip: always leave at least ten minutes after moisturising before you apply your foundation, or it will slide gently away….

You can economise on other products. Jo also really rates many other items in the Maybelline range, as well as L’Oréal Paris and Bourjois.  One brand we both love is the wonderful Make Up by Barbara Daly for Tesco, which actually has everything you need.  Here are Barbara’s top picks, with her comments, that she recently gave to YOU magazine.

Face Lift (an illuminating moisturiser), £6.75 for 50ml: ‘A cult product. It makes the skin look good for when you don’t want to wear foundation.’  (This is one of Sarah’s fave products ever.)
Light Effect Concealer Pen, £5.91: ‘I have a personal love for this cream concealer. It is super light.’
Super Sheer Loose Powder, £5.35: ‘I’ve never made anyone up without powder — it prevents smudging and makes you look pore-less.’
Lipstick, £5.06, and Gloss Elegance, £5.62: ‘The lipstick gives a clean edge; the gloss is creamy not gloopy.’
High Impact Mascara, £5.62: ‘I put this in because of the plastic brush, which helps avoid clumps. Never pump your mascara: that makes it dry out.’
Cheek to Cheek Blush, £4.78: ‘I used loads in the 70s. One half is matt, one half is shimmery highlighter.’
Designer Eyes Trio, £5.35: ‘Easy to use eye shadow which never creases.’
Easy-on-the-Eye Pen, £5.62: ‘Sheer colour with a brush applicator – foolproof, subtle.’

For make-up classes, we always recommend our friend Jenny Jordan, one of the most talented and nicest people you could meet.  (Jenny Jordan Eyebrow & Make-up Clinic, tel: 020-7483 2222, www.jennyjordan.com )  And we’ve also heard very good reports of the ‘non-professional’ courses at the Jemma Kidd Academy, tel: 0844 800 2636, www.jemmakidd.com

Good luck… and do let us know how it goes.

We Love. . .
Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Night Health Bedtime Bath Oil, £27.47 for 200ml, and Bedtime Face Cream, £44.04 for 50ml (from department stores nationwide, or www.origins.co.uk).  Sarah wrote about this on her Health Notes page a few weeks ago, but we are both loving the range, which was formulated in tandem with sleep scientists:  a clever, symbiotic duo of a Bath Oil and a face cream, designed to be used as a ritual to help induce and enhance sleep.  Jo – who had become such a light sleeper that she wakes if a leaf flutters off a tree outside – now incorporates them in her night-time ritual, and is definitely zzzzz-ing better.  (Even if you sleep like a baby, chances are you’ll like the combination of mandarin, chamomile and lavender essential oils, and the rich-but-lightweight moisturiser.)
