Beauty Clinic: Root rescue!

MATURE_BLONDE_REGROWTH.jpg

Q. I know the state of my roots is not the most crucial thing at the moment but it would make me feel better if I knew what to do with the dark and grey regrowth? Lots of my friends are having the same fret…

A. Don't worry. It’s the same here. Sarah had an email from one high powered friend with the subject box saying ‘What are you doing about HAIR?!’

We’re going to be writing about looking after your hair a lot in the coming weeks but the general rule from all the experts we consulted is to start by keeping your hair in the best condition you can.

So do look at the Haircare section of Beauty Bible Awards 2020; you’ll find some pretty amazing shampoo and conditioner duos for different colours/hair types tested by our rigorous panels. Click here to look at the different categories we trialled.

It’s also key – all the time but especially now – to give your hair some extra TLC with a good mask. Find our Award-winners here.

In any emergency situation, short or mid term (we just don't know in this current situation …), there are some fab products to blur grey or dark regrowth instantly. Here are our top products:

Color WOW Root Cover Up/£28.50. This mirrored palette of mineral powder, with a double-ended brush to apply, is a staple for beauty editors. It will cover greys, dark roots, refresh highlights – and even, they say, thicken the look of fine hair (though we haven’t tried that…). Eight shades and all are currently available on the Color Wow site. PLUS Color WOW has put together a great kit for our Beauty Bible prize draw going live Wednesday 1st April (nothing fool-ish about that…).

Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch Up Stick/£20. In three shades, Light Brown, Dark Blonde, Dark Brown/Black, this crayon (which comes with a brush for eyebrows), was extremely popular with Beauty Bible testers. (As happens in these unpredictable times, this is temporarily unavailable from the UK stockist from today 29.3.20 but you may find it online at other sites.)

Schwarzkopf Root Retoucher, £7. This spray delivery product comes in five shades. Again, very popular with our Beauty Bible tester panel. Bit confusingly this was called Syoss Root Retoucher so you may find that on the label but it is the same product.

Josh Wood Colour Root Marker/£8, in three shades, Darker Brown, Darker Blonde, and Lighter Blonde, this gives instant coverage and is super easy to apply. There’s an eyebrow brush too. NB We also really like the option to have an online consultation to work out the best products overall.

A few more tips for disguising regrowth:

• Change your parting: the fade/regrowth will be much less on areas that haven’t been exposed

• Wear a bandana or Alice band on your hairline

• If desperate and nothing else to hand, try disguising darker roots in blonde hair with ivory/flesh eye shadow; lighter or grey roots can be disguised with brown or black mascara.
